Several people in our area
sell various works of art. One neighbor purports to
be a sculptor, using rusty junk iron which he welds
together into improbable shapes. I don't see the
customers lining up to buy his works though, and he
tends to be more an object of local derision than
of envy.
You have to know what sells
in order to make it. Being good is not enough, your
item has to also be popular. Sadly, the art world
is less driven by talent than it is by sophistry
and vanity. If you can turn out a good painting or
sculpture though, many hospitals and other public
places now decorate the walls with works of art
which are marked up, with a portion of the proceeds
benefiting the institution that displays them.
Craft fairs also can provide an outlet, as well as
websites, and specialty shops.
