One of our neighbors has
litters of puppies running all over her kitchen.
She has a website up on which she advertises her
litters, and sells her puppies for $500 to $1500
each, depending on gender, markings, parentage,
etc. She strives to have the puppies house trained
by the time they are ready to be placed.
You need space for the
animals - cages for birds or reptiles, a yard for
dogs, and you have to have a love for animals -
good training skills are essential, abused animals
do not sell well. High dollar puppies come from
high dollar dogs, so you will need good breeding
stock to start. Many small animal breeders start
out with two valued pets, and baby animal demand
causes them to make it into a business. Choosing a
popular breed is critical, and choosing a breed
that is popular in your area will eliminate many
complications that can arise from transport issues.
Our neighbors fly dogs all over the country though.
My sister raises Shelties, and does well with them,
our neighbor raises Rotties. Another neighbor
raises Black Labs, but they have a difficult time
sellng them due to lack of demand in our area, and
poor marketing.
As a child, my sister and I
bred Finches. They are easy to breed, but sell for
just $5 each - it would take a lot of chicks to make a living at it! We got about 5-8 settings out of a
pair before they aged too much to produce chicks
that would live. They tended to produce about 2-4
chicks per setting. Rarer birds that are harder to
breed sell for much more, but have more
difficulties too.
