Some areas this does very
well, others it bombs. Out in the wilds of Wyoming,
I got a reasonable amount of work doing this. This
indicates to me that in a more populous area Icould have got more.
Competition can be stiff though. You have to know how to produce a
professional looking resume, and to be able to do
it in a way that sets it apart from the ones that
any person can now throw together on their personal
computer. A range of nice paper choices helps. I
charged $25 for a resume about five years ago, and offered a year of
free updates with two copies with each update -
additional copies were charged per copy. After that
I charged less for an update because the file was
already on my computer. I had some regular
customers who came back again and again for updatesand other desktop publishing needs.
The trick to it in Wyoming (where people are impatient and unimpressed by pomp), seemed to be to fiddle with the formatting so that
the resume could be condensed down onto one page,
but still be readable and logically laid out. Only
fast track corporate types need multi-page resumes.
Most average people seeking an average job will do
better with a single page resume because more than
that will cause the employer to feel that the
applicant is wasting their time by puffing
themselves up to look better than they
are. Several of my clients received compliments on their resumes from prospective employers and employment specialists.
