I was approached by a woman
who wanted to make western shirts and market them.
She wanted to make them on custom orders. Shortly
after I created and posted a website for her, she
moved, and became unreachable. The email from the
website came to me, and I left the website in
place, with very rough information. In spite of the
lack of content, people emailed me asking questions
anyway. Finally I began forwarding them to another
seamstress I knew, because the traffic from the
site, based on very little information, was stillsurprisingly heavy. We learned that there was areal need for this service.
She further investigated and decided to address a single facet
of the need, and is now carrying a line of custom
order western shirts. She has had requests for a
wide variety of custom sewing work, and the profit
margin on them is good. Materials are a bit hard
for her to get on some items, because we live in an
isolated area. Her investments consist of a sewing
machine, a serger, and an embroidery machine. She
buys patterns as needed, then takes good care of
them for reuse. This is only appropriate for
someone with superior sewing skills, and who loves
to do it enough that they will not tire of
it.
Another friend of mine makes
children's clothing. Some of it is amazingly basic,
you would not think it would sell, but it does,
because of the fabrics she chooses. She has a
natural gift for style and for knowing what people
will like. Her patterns are custom made, and
finished with original trims. She sells these items
through her own website which she designed and
built herself. Her shopping cart takes orders, and
she tells her customers to allow 2 weeks so she can
custom make each item. This is her second such
business, the first one she sewed custom made cloth
diapers, and did well enough to be able to sell the
business.
