SMC

Rating:

Level of Review: Researched.

Overview: Membership in a program that involves buying retail and selling wholesale.

Product: Their product is training and wholesale goods. Yours is the resale of those goods. They have a wide range of products, mostly pretty ordinary, nothing unique about them.

Cost: $299-$385 - not clear whether there are ongoing membership fees or not.

Compensation: Profit from sale of goods.

Conclusion: I have read one positive but reserved review of their program. Personally, I am unimpressed. The review I read stated that their training materials were improving, but that they were still geared toward flea market sales. The products supposedly can be sold through mail order, online, or other ways.

It has the drawback of most drop ship/wholesaler "programs". The products are pretty blase. The ones they show in their ad materials are listed with a wholesale price, and a retail price, but I feel you would be hard pressed to get the suggested retail price out of them. And they don't give you a general or average markup percentage, so there is no way of telling whether the items they show have a typical markup or not. In most programs of this type, the markup on a few items is high, on the rest it is not remarkable, and on all of them the wholesale price is not much better than an average retail price (just because they list a high retail price does not mean that you can sell it for that).

If you are going to open a store, or sell at flea markets, or sell online, or through mail order, I feel you are better off finding a wholesaler who carries what you need, who does not charge you a fee to participate in a membership program. Then go to your local bookstore, or search through online small business resources (SuperMom site, or SBA site), and do it right. It will cost you far less in the long run, and you can choose a unique product, or something that really interests you, and you will know ahead of time whether or not you can really sell it at a profit.

This one is too blind for me - too many unknowns that could backfire, and what they do show feels questionable. It might be possible with some classy marketing to sell the products they have, but you would have to find a way to make them distinct and desirable to your customers.

Our Rating System:

No program is right for everyone. Even a rating of four or five does not indicate that you should dive in without some careful thought and consideration. Business is still risky. All reviews have the reasons for the rating clearly defined.

 - Information presented in program is accurate and factual concerning the potential of the program, program is based on sound business principles, and has good potential to provide stable income for individuals to whom the program is suitable.

 - Information is accurately presented, company focuses on selling product, but business is either more confusing, less predictable, or slightly higher risk for one of a number of reasons. Still considered a sound company and very acceptable risk.

 - Information may be confusing or misleading, company may have significant issues with program structure, support of product, or public perception and reputation. A rating of three does not mean you should not do it. It just means you need to be sure you are suited to overcoming the difficulties that the program has.

 - Information generally misleading, risk fairly high, many unanswered questions, business principles questionable, but still has some potential for actually working for some people.

 - Cannot declare that it is an outright scam, but potential for it to work is very low. Will have questionable business theory, bad reputation, excessive hype that is not backed up by common sense, or other aspects which indicate very high risk. Will always have multiple issues, not just one thing.

 - Outright Scam. Anything labeled this way is never worth any kind of risk.
